Contents
Background
Tohei Benzaki is a Tokyo officer worker and lives in a humble appartment. He is single and has difficulty to find a wife and became an easy target for Vermouth and Bourbon so they could knock him out and impersonate him in order to take information from Jodie about whether or not Akai is dead. He asked Jodie who was the one with her thinking it was Akai even if he knew it was only a disguise since Bourbon disguised himself as both Scar Akai and him.
It is stated that he can drive since police found his driver license in his wallet. He went to the bank to register his paycheck and knew Jodie, but a group of robbers made a bank heist and asked people to put tape on their mouths. He is religious since he recollected himself to a shrine to honor the traditions and watch the cherry blossoms.
According to the Tokyo MPD, he was a single and, as Conan deduced, Motoe Benzaki, his pretended wife, was in fact Vermouth in disguise. She pretended she was his pregnant wife even though it was impossible since he was single and she couldn't have put the tape on people's mouths at the Teito Bank heist since only singles could put tape on people to eliminate any emotion involved.
Appearance
He is a man in pretty good shape and has a simple haircut with light bangs. He appears wearing a coat with a turtleneck and a medical mask to disguise his voice when Bourbon used it. He has an average height.
Personality
He is a normal working man who doesn't like to be disturbed. He lives calmly and was irritated when the police went to question him. When Bourbon disguises as him, he seem more polite and inviting and likes conversation which really contrasts giving more clues to him having been impersonated. He is precautious since he only brings few money because when he was pickpocketed, he wasn't stolen a large amount of cash.
Plot overview
A Shrine to Remember (Manga: 850-852, Anime: 734)
Bourbon knocked him out to ask Jodie further information about Akai.
Cocktail of Sorrow (Manga: 855, Anime: 739)
Takagi told Conan that he is strange, since there is a contradiction in bank robbery case. Then, the real one said that he does not remember he was involved in the preview pickpocket murder case and he is unmarried. Conan suspected that fake couple is Bourbon and Vermouth.
Appellations
Name origin
Tohei Benzaki (弁崎 桐平), just like the other suspects in his introductory case, has a name related to "flower viewing" (花見 hanami )[1]. It comes from "bento boxes" (弁当), which are often brought as a quick way to eat while enjoying the flowers. Moreover, Motoe Benzaki (弁崎 素江), the name used by Vermouth and Bourbon to create a fake wife for him, is an anagram of Vermouth as "benmoto" sounds similar to "berumotto", the Japanese word for Vermouth[2].
