Plot
Morofushi and Yamato arrive at the hospital and tell Agasa, the Detective Boys and Uehara that the investigation is finally over. Morofushi inquires about Yuuta's condition and the three suspects say that the surgery was completed, but Yuuta still has not regained consciousness yet and may not ever wake up. The Detective Boys get sad when they hear this. Haibara asks where Conan is, and Yamato says that he left before them so he might be at the toilet, but Uehara interrupts him, asking him why he is wearing sunglasses, gloves and a scarf. Yamato says that he felt shivers at the crime scene earlier and feels like it is too bright when he looks at fires or lights. The Detective Boys say that it is probably the curse of the Light of the Dead, but Yamato refutes that, and is handed a canned coffee by Morofushi. When he takes the can however, fire erupts and backs off. While he waves his gloves to get rid of the smoke, he backs into a pillar, and suddenly, smoke erupts from the back of his jacket. Uehara asks him to remove the jacket and she notices a burn mark behind his jacket. Yamato wonders where that fire came from, but suddenly, his scarf lights on fire, scaring Uehara and the Detective Boys, who wonder if it really is the ghost. He suddenly throws the scarf away and Conan arrives with an extinguisher and puts out the fire, explaining that this is all what the culprit what them to believe.
Genta points out the fire that suddenly started in his gloves, but Conan asks him to check the canned coffee, and they see a faint transparent flame on top of it. Conan explains that hand sanitizer was smeared on it, then lit on fire, and since it is made of ethanol, the flame it produces is colorless and hard to spot and does not produce smoke. Mitsuhiko then points out the smoke emerging from the back of Yamato's jacket, and Yamato does it again. When he removes the jacket, he shows that a coin purse filled with dry ice and water was inside his hood, and that the water is condensed by the dry ice and along with carbon dioxyde, producing white smoke, but since the smoke is heavier than air, then it does come out of the hood, exept when it is pushed out, like when someone leans against the wall. The burn mark was added prior to the trick happening, and since it was under the hood, nobody could see it. Further evidence is that Kaori's jacket was not warm where the burn mark was. Uehara then asks how the fire started on his scarf, since it was real. Morofushi pulls out a laser pointer, but not the regular kind, but instead, an imported model that has an output higher than 10000 milliwatts. If it is pointed at something flammable like fleece, it will not take long before it catches fire and spreads all over the material. Yamato explains that the only one who could pull off the trick was none other than the one with the coin purse, the laser pointer and the hand sanitizer, Tamaki Itou. Shichisuke and Kaori are suprised and ask her if she really did it. Tamaki tries to contest it, saying that during the filming, she did not have any hand sanitizer with her. Conan says that instead, when she was preparing the materials, she had her back to them, and could easily pour some hand sanitizer on a small plate and light it on fire, using the noiseless electric lighter she had stolen from Shichisuke. She placed the plate right behind her, so when she leant back saying that Takehiko did not come after all, the fire would spread to her jacket. Later, since everyone had their gaze turned to the jacket being thrown away, she could use the occasion to quickly bury the plate and the lighter under some snow. She then tries to say that there was no coin purse inside Kaori's jacket earlier when they removed it, but Conan shows the footage Mitsuhiko captured of the incident, which shows Tamaki touching Kaori's hood. This was probably when she retrieved the purse and hid it in her sleeve. The proof is that later in the video we can see that Tamaki's hand is tucked in her sleeve. She could have added the burn mark at any moment Kaori was not wearing the jacket and could easily acquire dry ice by buying the ice cream. She had broken the air conditioner on purpose in the Mini and cranked up the heat the van, to induce Yuuta in wanting to drive it instead of staying in the van. Lastly, she spiked Shichisuke's coffee, making him wanting to go to the restroom and thus making him have to speed up to Yuuta and tell him. Yuuta would then be forced to open his window, and he would then rest his arm on the windowsill. Tamaki tries to disprove it, saying that there is no way the fire could have been lit since they stayed at most a few seconds next to Yuuta's car. Morofushi explains that she did not shine the laser at Yuuta's arm, but instead, it was already fixed to the Mini, affixed with tape on the bottom of the passenger window behind the driver seat, in a way that it would directly point at his arm if he poked it out. Just that single incident of his arm lighting on fire would maybe have been enough to scare him and make him go off the road, but the two other incidents amplified Yuuta's fear and the likelihood of him crashing, since he would think the paranormal was involved. Later, right after the accident, Tamaki was seen crouching and making a call next to the Mini and this was probably when she retrieved the tape and laser, which is proven by the fact that there is clean spot next to the back wheel, which was probably covered by the tape. The fact that she wore sunglasses was also probably so the pointer light would not get in her eyes. Yamato and Morofushi furthermore show the tape and laser that the police found in the woods, along with the small plate and lighter found in the snow, which probably have her fingerprints on it.
This time, Tamaki does not try to refute it and is dead silent. Shichisuke and Kaori urge her to say something, and that Yuuta saved her life before. Tamaki gets angry and says that he did not save her life and that he was the one who killed her boyfriend Takehiko. She says proof of that is the compass badges everyone had. Takehiko's badge was slightly different from the others, since the handakuten ◌゚ on the "パ" in "コンパス" (Compass) was changed to a "C", to mean "Captain", since Takehiko was the captain of the detective league. She knows this since Takehiko had explicitly requested her to change it for his badge when she crafted the badges. When she saw Yuuta wearing Takehiko's badge and remembering him saying he did not find Takehiko in the fire, she put two and two together and figured out he must have stole it from Takehiko pinned under the cupboard and that he would later try to steal her from Takehiko. The Detective Boys protest, saying that Yuuta told the kids that this badge from Takehiko and nobody who stole something would brag about it. They say what happened during the fire was just like the "relay race", quoting the conversation they had with Uehara in the Beetle. Just like how one racer gives his baton to the next one, Takehiko entrusted his badge to Yuuta, passing him the captaincy. Tamaki starts crying, saying that this cannot be true, but Yamato puts the nail in the coffin by showing her the recording from a phone call made to police dispatch during the fire. In the call, Yuuta is explaining to the dispatcher that the one needing help, Takehiko is pinned under a cupboard and tells the dispatcher the address so they rescue him. Meanwhile, Takehiko regains consciousness and tells Yuuta to go save Tamaki, who is sleeping on the sofa in the living room, and leave him there since he cannot lift the shelves anyway. Yuuta tells Takehiko to stay put and that he will come back right away, before the call cuts off. Yamato says that when rescue came, Yuuta had only just come out of the lodge with Tamaki and that the fire was burning so fiercely they did not have time to go back to Takehiko. The trace of blunt trauma the police later found on Takehiko was probably from the cupboard falling on Takehiko. Shichisuke then asks why Yuuta did not tell them, and Morofushi hypothesizes that he probably did not want to burden with the fact that Takehiko left his live for Tamaki's. As Tamaki realizes her mistake, a nurse arrives and says that Yuuta has just regained consciousness, making everyone happy. Morofushi and Yamato tell Tamaki that before she heads to the station, she must go to apologize to Yuuta, which she says she will.
Three days later, at the Mouri Detective Agency, Conan is met with a still sick Kogoro who is adamant about going to Nagano again even though he has not recovered. While Ran holds him, saying that he is like this due to the picture Conan sent, Kogoro is yelling that he deserved the warm welcome. Conan realizes that it is because of the picture he sent of him being hugged by the two young police officers from the marching band.
